My wife and I hired Mr. Carlson to prepare our family trust. We spent quite a long time with him going over the details of the trust, explaining our blended family situation, etc. He raised some excellent points about what was needed and why, in terms of ensuring that our beneficiaries would not have any major difficulties in the event of our demise. He was charming and friendly. His rate was very reasonable. He did a very good job of explaining why he was the best choice for the task at hand, and had lots of marketing materials to back up his claims.

The book he gave us was massive and comprehensive. When we left the office, ha asked us to please rate him - and he said not to rate him unless we were going to give him 5 stars because he didn't want to ruin his perfect record.

In my opinion his record shouldn't be perfect. When we got home and began to look more closely at the documentation, we realized that our personal family information was seriously garbled. My kids were attributed to my wife, my wife's were attributed to me, grandkids were mislabeled, names were misspelled - I've spent hours correcting mistakes that shouldn't have been made.

My concern is that it now appears that the only actual work he had to do was to get the personal information correct. The rest of the documentation was cookie-cutter based on Colorado and Federal tax law.

If there were this many mistakes on the personal side of things, how am I to know that the other information is correct? I am left wondering if I now have to hire another attorney to review the entire document for accuracy.

It seems to me that one of the most important attributes of a good attorney is attention to detail. Mr. Carlson did not, in our case, get the details right.

After our move from Texas, we needed to update our estate planning to comply with the laws and regulations of Colorado. A search for a local attorney led us to Carlson Law Office.

Mr. Carlson is located about 45 minutes from our home, but my husband and I decided to hire him, rather than a local attorney, after reading his reviews on AVVO and meeting him in person.

Mr. Carlson clearly explains the differences between wills and trusts, and, after we made our decisions, documents were prepared within one week for our signatures. He establishes follow up meetings, if desired, and he provides timely responses to our questions. We found his fees quite reasonable.

We now have legal documents which will protect our interests and wishes in the event of incapacity, last illness, or death. While these are never easy subjects to consider or discuss, Mr. Carlson made the process as comfortable as it could possibly be.

Mr. Carlson presents these materials in a large binder which clearly annotates the documents needed for various events. The binder also contains numerous, helpful, articles and summaries for us as well as our successor trustee. I'm sure the ease of finding necessary information during future stressful times will help us (and our successor) immeasurably.

I come from a profession where the rank of 5 stars was abandoned years ago. And while George Marshall has long been a personal hero and I once watched Omar Bradley's burial at Arlington in 1981, I have never met a 5 star General. Still...I get it. a 5 star spread has been deemed necessary in our society to gauge anything from poor performance to excellence. I can tell you that if the reader needs a lawyer who can navigate his way through a tax code that appears to have been written in the Ming Dynasty, Carlson is your man. Look: death and taxes are a certainty. At some point we all look to our survivors with the hope that they don't get hammered with death duties. This guy know what he is doing. Another general (General Mike Hayden) recently wrote a book titled PLAY TO THE EDGE, His point was/is that you push to the point that you get chalk marks on your shoe tops. While Hayden only got 4 stars, he has a point. Our tax code is complicated and we all need someone who can play us to the edge while remaining legal. In our view, Marc Carlson has earned his 5 stars.
