Imagine this scenario: You make an honest mistake, get in over your head, and overdose on a drug. You call 911 for help, only to have the EMTs brush off your symptoms before the police arrest you and charge you with several felonies. Pretty messed up, right? Yeah, it sucked, like most instances of overreach by our justice system do.
Under the current law, a small bag of a scheduled drug could land you in prison for up to ten years! Fortunately, this was my first and only offense. Unfortunately, the young prosecutor refused to allow the first time offender program, which is designed for cases just like this! Of course, it could have been worse if I hadn't been referred to Mr. Leiva by my therapist.
They say the first thing you should look for in a criminal defense attorney is real world trial experience. Not only is that experience beneficial should you need to go to trial, it also lets the prosecution know that your counsel isn't afraid to take your case to trial, a very important advantage during preliminary negotiations.
Mr. Leiva has extensive trial experience, in addition to his many years as an attorney. Were it not for this fact, along with his expert legal acumen, I was looking at almost guaranteed prison time, an especially horrific notion for someone with PTSD.
