There's a lot to watch out for when you're planning for the future, including several estate planning scams. The death of an honest, treasured human being brought out the worst in unscrupulous relatives who had not visited in years. The day after the funeral, his widow was transported out-of-state. In deep grief, she was then brought to a financial advisor the following day. The advisor referred this elderly grieving widow to Chris A. Owens, who prepared a new Last Will and Testament even though this grieving widow's current Will was just few years old and written while husband, an attorney, was alive and well. She also prepared a Power of Attorney, which to this day remains a mystery. Lawsuits ensued. Nearly seven years later, over $200,000 has been spent in legal fees, yet this widow is none the wiser as to what became of 36 death certificates during the few months the POA was in effect, nor did same relatives as much as call when she was hospitalized within weeks due to pulmonary embolism. Moral of the story. There are good and bad humans; attorneys and relatives are human. There are those who prey on the elderly with questionable advice. When a copy of POA signed under undue influence was requested, Chris A. Owens's curt response, "The file is closed... will not send a copy without a court order!" despite PAID in full at time of service. According to Forbes, "The National Consumer Law Center describes these attorneys' as dishonest salespeople who prey on seniors’ fears that after their deaths, their life savings and assets will be stolen by the government or predatory probate attorneys." Of course this would have been preferred rather than witness the same during the epilogue of a widow's life.

After my wife died, I found that I needed to update my will and related documents, including setting my daughter up with Power of Attorney. Chris helped me with this work, showing care and compassion for my recent loss.
When my husband and I were planning to get married - second marriages for both of us - Chris Owens helped us sort out how we should manage our future estates, keeping everything fair and in perspective for our surviving families. Blending families is always a challenge, and Chris made the process seamless. We have confidence that our heirs will think that the best decisions were made.
